Download GPU-Z for a closer look at your graphics card

Developer: TechPowerUpOfficial website ↗

GPU-Z identifies graphics hardware and exposes the sensors it supports. TechPowerUp provides a portable executable with an optional installation.

Know which graphics adapter you are checking

A graphics-card name in a shop listing may not tell you the memory configuration, board vendor or operating clocks. GPU-Z puts those details in one place. TechPowerUp develops the utility for Windows and permits free personal and commercial use; redistributing it inside a commercial package is a separate licensing matter. You can run the downloaded executable without installing the application permanently.

Start by selecting the correct adapter if the computer has both integrated and dedicated graphics. Record its name, GPU identifier, memory size and memory type. These are useful details when asking why a game is using the wrong device or checking whether a secondhand card matches its description. A sensor reading from the integrated adapter should not be treated as a measurement of the separate graphics card.

Specifications and sensors answer different questions

The main information view describes the device, while Sensors helps you observe available live readings. Supported values depend on the GPU, firmware and driver. Temperature, load or clock readings are useful only when you know the workload behind them. Note whether the machine was idle, playing a game or rendering video. An absent reading does not mean that the component has a zero temperature or no power consumption.

GPU-Z includes a small render test for checking the PCI Express connection under load. The link can reduce its operating speed while idle, so a lower initial reading is not automatically a hardware fault. This test is for checking link behaviour; it does not establish stability across every game and is not a complete graphics benchmark. Stop it when your observation is complete.

Download and first launch

The official download page lists the standard executable and themed variants. Choose the standard release unless you specifically want the alternative appearance. TechPowerUp documents Windows XP through Windows 11 and both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. That operating-system coverage does not guarantee that every new GPU works with an old driver or unsupported Windows installation.

Save the executable to a folder you can find again, inspect its publisher information and open it. Decline permanent installation if you only need a portable check; otherwise follow the installer option. Let detection finish, select the intended adapter and begin with identification rather than starting extra tests immediately. If a render-test dependency is missing, read the prompt before accepting its separate download.

Use the result to narrow a problem

Keep your comparison controlled: the same adapter, workload and power settings should be used on both runs. A card that lowers clocks on the desktop may be behaving normally. When sharing a screenshot or validation result, review any identifying details first and explain the symptoms in words. A model name alone cannot confirm that cooling, power delivery and drivers are all healthy.

For processor and RAM information, CPU-Z complements the graphics view. HWiNFO is useful when the investigation involves several components at once. GPU-Z does not install a replacement display driver or adjust overclocking sliders. Its value is a clearer description of the hardware you already have, so the next troubleshooting step is based on evidence rather than a guessed specification.

Questions and answers

Is GPU-Z free for work use?

TechPowerUp permits personal and commercial use without a fee. Redistribution as part of a commercial package is not covered by that permission, and developer integrations or custom support have separate arrangements.

Does GPU-Z overclock the card?

No. It displays graphics information and supported sensor readings, with a render test for checking the PCIe link. Reading a higher boost clock does not mean the application applied an overclock.

Why does the PCIe speed look low?

The connection may lower its operating speed at idle to save power. Compare the reading under the supplied render test, and consider the card, slot and motherboard specifications before assuming something is broken.
