Start with the drive, not a speed test
A slow file copy can have several causes. Before running repeated benchmarks, CrystalDiskInfo gives you a way to inspect the health information that a supported drive reports. The free, open-source utility from Crystal Dew World works with HDDs and SSDs, including supported NVMe devices. It can also access some USB and Intel RAID configurations, but access through a controller or enclosure is not universal.
Select the intended drive by model and capacity before interpreting its status. On a computer with several disks, the Windows system drive and a backup disk may have very different histories. Check the displayed identity and available temperature, operating time and health information together. A convenient colour or percentage is a summary of reported data, not a promise that the drive cannot fail tomorrow.
Understand what a warning can tell you
SMART attributes and NVMe health fields vary between device families. A raw counter should not be compared across unrelated models as if it always represented the same measurement. CrystalDiskInfo interprets supported attributes and can flag conditions that deserve attention. The accompanying details matter more than copying one alarming number without its attribute name or the exact drive model.
If a drive reports a caution or bad status and holds your only copy of important files, prioritise a backup to another healthy device. Do not start repeated speed tests to prove the warning wrong. Mechanical noises, disconnections or unreadable data deserve separate investigation even when the summary looks normal. Monitoring can support a decision, but it cannot repair media damage or guarantee recovery from a failing device.
Which Windows package should you choose?
The developer lists Windows XP through Windows 11, with architecture-specific executables. There are important qualifications: the installer does not support Windows XP, and NVMe support requires Windows 10 or later. The latest email-notification features require .NET Framework 4.8 or later. Choose the package for your actual operating system rather than treating every feature as available on every supported legacy version.
The official download page offers a standard edition and character-themed editions. For a compact diagnostic workflow, begin with the standard package. Use setup for a normal installation or extract the portable archive into a folder. Start the appropriate executable and allow detection to finish. If an external enclosure hides the information, the missing reading may be a limitation of the bridge rather than proof that the disk has no sensors.
Make the first inspection useful
Write down the drive model, connection type and the problem you noticed. Read the status and related attributes before changing any advanced controls. When sharing a report or screenshot, conceal serial numbers if you do not want them publicly visible. Repeat a reading under comparable conditions when tracking change, but do not delay backing up a drive that is showing symptoms.
CrystalDiskMark measures performance and answers a different question; it is better considered after important data is protected. Recuva may help with accidentally deleted files on suitable readable storage, whereas CrystalDiskInfo itself is not a file recovery tool. Download it for informed observation and early investigation, not as a repair button that makes an unhealthy disk reliable again.
