A quick answer to a full-drive warning

WizTree is designed for the moment when Windows reports little space and you need to know which files are responsible. Select a drive, scan it and examine the largest folders or files. Antibody Software provides the Windows tool free for personal use. Commercial use needs an appropriate paid license, so a technician should check the licensing terms before using a personal download as part of a business service.

On local NTFS volumes, WizTree can read the Master File Table directly rather than visiting every folder through the usual file APIs. This explains its approach to fast scanning; it is not a promise of an identical completion time on every drive. Access rights, the file system and the chosen location matter. Network shares, non-NTFS media and individual directories can be examined too, but do not assume the same scanning method applies everywhere.

Download, permissions and the first scan

Choose the Windows installer or portable archive on the official download page. WizTreeMac is a separate product, so do not select its package for a Windows machine. Check the system information and current download notes before installation. The developer also documents Windows ARM operation through Prism emulation. Save the installer and follow setup, or extract the portable package completely before opening the appropriate executable from its folder.

Start with the drive that triggered the space warning. Administrator access enables direct MFT scanning of local NTFS volumes; use it when this inspection requires it. A regular user scan remains useful for accessible locations. Let the scan complete, then compare the folder tree with the file list. Sorting individual files by size can reveal one huge archive that a broad folder total would otherwise hide among many ordinary documents.

The treemap adds a visual route to the same information. Click a large region, read its full path and determine which application or person owns it. Use the file search to narrow a crowded list by name or extension. File size and allocated space describe different things, so keep the same measure when comparing results. Exporting a CSV can preserve an inventory for review, but it does not back up the listed files themselves.

Treat duplicate suggestions as leads

WizTree can group apparent duplicates using file names, sizes and optionally dates. Its duplicate detection does not establish that file contents are identical. Two similarly named files may contain different work, and separate copies may be intentional backups. Open and compare candidates before removing anything. Also distinguish a personal document from files inside application or Windows directories; uninstall software through its normal removal process instead of deleting its folder wholesale.

After moving confirmed personal files or removing an unwanted application, scan again and check the drive's available space. WinDirStat offers an open source alternative for visual storage investigation. Everything is useful when you already know part of a filename and want to find it repeatedly. WizTree is most valuable for sizing up a storage problem before a targeted action, rather than turning every large item into a deletion target.

Questions and answers

Is WizTree free at work?

The free license covers personal use, not commercial use. Businesses and technicians should select an appropriate paid license from Antibody Software. Check the terms for your situation rather than assuming a free download grants business rights.

Are duplicate matches guaranteed identical?

No. WizTree uses names, sizes and optionally dates for these suggestions, not a full content comparison. Review the files yourself and consider whether a second copy is an intentional backup before deleting it.

Why can a network scan take longer?

The direct MFT approach applies to suitable local NTFS volumes with the required access. Network locations and other file systems are scanned differently, so connection speed, permissions and the directory contents can affect completion time.
