Choose the Free edition deliberately
CCleaner combines storage cleanup and maintenance tools in a commercial product range. The Free edition is useful when your goal is occasional cleaning of selected temporary data. Downloading it does not mean every feature advertised elsewhere in the range becomes free. Check the edition displayed on the download page and distinguish a free installation from an offer to try Professional. This avoids starting with the wrong expectations about available tools or future charges.
Before installing, decide what you want to change. Recovering space occupied by browser caches is different from updating drivers or changing background activity. You do not need to enable every maintenance function to complete a simple cleanup. If Windows is slow, note when the slowdown happens first: at sign-in, while opening a particular application or after a long session. A cleaner cannot establish that all of these symptoms share one cause.
Download and install the Windows package
Use the official CCleaner download page and choose the Windows Free offering. The current Windows edition supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. A separate Mac product exists, but its installer is not suitable for this page's Windows workflow. Save the installer, close important work and review each setup screen. Read any optional choices before continuing, and check which edition opens after installation rather than assuming a promotional trial is the same as Free.
Open the cleaning controls and inspect the selected categories before the first run. Browser data deserves particular attention. Clearing cached pictures normally means they will be downloaded again; clearing cookies may sign you out of websites. History and recent-file lists can also be useful during work. Keep anything you want to preserve unchecked, and close the relevant browser only after saving forms, documents or other unfinished activity.
Use the analysis as a decision point
Run the analysis and read what CCleaner proposes to remove. Look for recognizable application names and locations. If the result includes a category you do not understand, remove it from the selection and analyze again. A large number of detected files is not a score you need to maximize. It may simply represent thousands of small cache entries rather than a meaningful amount of recoverable space.
After cleaning, open your usual applications and compare the free space on the same drive. Some files will return because programs need them. Repeatedly deleting useful caches can add extra downloads without solving the original problem. Avoid treating registry cleanup as a routine requirement for a healthy PC; removing entries is not a reliable substitute for identifying a specific application fault. Keep document backups independent from any cleanup routine.
When another utility fits better
BleachBit is an open source alternative for readers who prefer focused cleaning without a commercial upgrade path. If you cannot tell why the disk is full, WizTree maps large files and folders so you can investigate before removing anything. Autoruns addresses a different question: which components launch automatically. Choosing the tool that matches the symptom makes the result easier to check than applying several unrelated maintenance actions at once.
